FORECAST: It couldn’t actually be looking any better for this weekend and there’s still time to sign up if you’re a fair weather camper!  The ice cream van will be busy!  A lovely warm and sunny day for Saturday, and Sunday.  Light winds and staying dry will mean your shack will be intact no matter how rubbish you are at putting one together!  It will still get quite cool overnight though, so you’ll want to keep the draughts out…but so far so good!  I look forward to seeing you there. Details below:

The charity Habitat For Humanity have approached me with an exciting new fundraising project and I am thrilled to be involved.  Think ‘Scrapheap Challenge’ meets ‘Ray Mears’ and that’s what we’ve got.  Get a load of unwanted junk, fix it to other bits of junk in the vague shape of a house, add your personal touches, and then sleep in it with a few of your mates for an entire night.  Add in the fact there’ll be another few hundred people doing the same and you’ve got a community of rufty tufty survivors all raising money for charity. Confused?

Calverley Grounds, Tunbridge Wells

Here’s the concept.

On September 8th 2012 hundreds of people will gather in their teams in Calverley Grounds in Tunbridge Wells to make local history.  Teams have to bring everything they need with them, and take it all away again at the end of the event. It all has to be legal, so definitely no rooting around in people’s gardens! People can scavenge from their own rubbish and hunt in their sheds, ask at the local tip and recycling centres, talk to local businesses etc.  In the past people have made shelters from old carpet tubes, carrier bags, plastic piping, tarpaulins, logs, old corporate banners, bin bags, wooden pallets, astroturf offcuts, rolled up newspapers, ladders, bamboo canes, umbrellas…

Home Sweet Home

Why Shack Attack?

It’s to raise awareness for the plight of 1.6 billion people around the world who are living in substandard makeshift housing.  Latest figures suggest 100 million people have no home at all.  This challenge is to raise money so that Habitat For Humanity (HFH) can continue to help people to live in safe, clean and warm homes all around the world.  You can read more about how HFH have already helped 2.5 million people across 80 different countries to escape poverty housing so far, here.

How am I involved?

I shall be there providing the all important weather forecast of course!  (please please no rain…)  I shall also be helping various teams build their shacks and hopefully giving some moral support to all those taking part.

Old bits of furniture will do, and why not a homely plant to brighten up your shack too?

What can you do?

Sign up!  When else are you going to be able to camp out in Calverley Grounds with hundreds of other great people, showing off your Bear Grylls skills, building a home from a load of flotsam and jetsam?  It’s quirky, cool and downright cranky…but brilliant!  So sign up here and I’ll see you on the 8th September!  There’s a competition for the best shack too so it’s worth reigniting that artistic flair you thought you’d left behind with the finger painting and fuzzy felts.  You can follow me on twitter @kaddylp to keep up to date with the forecast too!
